“Too noisy, without decorum”: A Canadian woman criticizes Nigerians overseas

A Nigerian living in Canada has criticized Nigerians living overseas for being “too loud” and overtly exposing oneself on social media, cautioning that such behavior frequently results in preventable bad luck.

The expert made fun of how some Nigerians quickly take on nicknames associated with foreign cities, such “Toyin of Toronto” or “Balogun of Luton,” in a video that went viral. She claimed that these customs were superfluous and painted Nigerians as impolite.

According to her, unlike the current generation, Nigerians who migrated in earlier years were more cautious, often deactivating their social media accounts to avoid drawing attention to themselves while settling in a new country.

‘Oversharing On social media spoils it for others’

The expert condemned the trend of Nigerians announcing every detail of their daily lives online, from arrivals at airports to personal activities. She described the behaviour as reckless, saying it exposes migrants to unnecessary risks and fuels resentment from locals.

She expressed concern that excessive exposure online paints Nigerians in a bad light internationally, making them appear loud, careless, and a potential threat to host countries.

Citing Ghana as an example, she warned that reckless conduct has led to increasing hostility, with locals demanding that Nigerians leave, further complicating their stay abroad.
