Viktor Gyokeres, a 26-year-old Swedish striker who joined from Sporting CP in the summer and has only scored three goals in eight appearances across all competitions, has been thrown into a regular starting role with Kai Havertz out since August due to injury, but he has yet to establish consistency in front of goal.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has backed Gyokeres after the Swedish striker failed to score in Sunday’s Premier League match against Newcastle United.

More than just goals, Arteta emphasized that Gyokeres’ impact goes beyond finishing, citing his pressing, hold-up play and aerial battles as essential to Arsenal’s system. In spite of his drought, Arteta praised the striker’s attitude and insisted that Gyokeres’ overall contribution remains valuable. The Spaniard praised his striker’s involvement in key attacking phases and commended his composure after a penalty appeal was overturned by VAR in the first half.

“He’s a really confident boy, his work ethic is incredible, and the demands he puts on himself every day are very high,” Arteta said. “It’s a joy to work with him, and his ceiling is very, very high.”
