BREAKING: Police arrest Sowore hours after meeting Nnamdi Kanu at Federal High Court
Human rights activist and convener of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest, Omoyele Sowore, has been arrested by security operatives in Abuja.
Sowore was reportedly arrested at the Federal High Court, Abuja, shortly after he was seen exchanging pleasantries with the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, within the court premises.
Arrest Follows Recent #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protest
His arrest is believed to be linked to the recently concluded #FreeNnamdiKanuNow demonstration held in the nation’s capital.
The protest, which was organised to demand Kanu’s unconditional release, saw heavy security presence and forceful dispersal by operatives.
According to reports, demonstrators were attacked with tear gas and arbitrarily arrested during the rally, which was headed by Sowore.
Emmanuel Kanu, Nnamdi Kanu’s brother, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, one of Kanu’s attorneys, and perhaps eleven other activists were among those arrested.
Sowore Escaped During Protest But Later Apprehended
Although Sowore initially escaped arrest during the protest chaos, witnesses said he narrowly avoided capture after security agents fired teargas to disperse demonstrators.
However, during today’s court sitting, where Nnamdi Kanu’s terrorism trial resumed, Sowore was sighted at the court premises. It was there that security operatives moved in and arrested him shortly after his brief interaction with Kanu.
Background
Sowore, who is also the publisher of Sahara Reporters and a known critic of the Nigerian government, has been a consistent advocate for human rights and political freedom.
His latest arrest adds to a growing list of confrontations between activists and security agencies in the country.

A Nigerian man has taken to social media, revealing the next spot bandits hit after the church attack in Eruku, Kwara State.
It would be recalled that tragedy struck on November 18, 2025 after gunmen stormed the Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku.
A .survivor told TVC that the attackers opened fire just minutes into the evening service, killing three people and abducting about 38 congregants, who have been released.

The man identified by the X handle @Theyemiking, after the bandits attacked the church in Eruku, they launched an attack in Isapa.
In his viral tweet, he pointed out that Isapa is only a 20‑minute drive from Eruku.

This was announced by President Bola Tinubu announced in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter).
He expressed gratitude to the security forces for their hands‑on effort.
The announcement came after Kwara state governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, credited Tinubu’s personal intervention for the release of the abducted congregants.
